Located 110km west of Melbourne, the City of Ballarat is the third largest city in Victoria. It is also one of the fastest growing Council’s in regional Australia with a population of 113,763, predicted to increase to 145,900 by 2036. Ballarat is a major manufacturing, health, retail and education centre steeped in history with its grand architecture and streetscapes coupled with contemporary amenities. The Role

Her Majesty’s Theatre (HMT) Ballarat is one of Australia’s oldest theatres. The HMT Manager will lead the venue to provide a sustainable and viable performing arts platform for the Ballarat community. Importantly ensuring quality outcomes and programming that both maximises the usage of the venue as well as providing our community with culturally enriching and exciting experiences. 

The role further manages two other significant venues - the Ballarat Civic Hall and the Ballarat Mining Exchange. These venues are heavily utilised for a diverse range of private, business, and hospitality events and can also be used as secondary performance spaces. To ensure the effective usage of these venues through commercial hire, ongoing promotion and the attraction of hirers is an important focus of the HMT Manager. To support the role there is a team of 10 permanent staff and a large team of casual staff.

About You

This role is a significant and impactful role for the City of Ballarat and the performing arts sector in the region requiring an experienced, dynamic, enthusiastic, and collaborative professional leader with high EQ and who embodies integrity, honesty.

You have extensive experience in Local Government within the management and administration of Theatres and live performance venues with experience working with boards and committees. You are regarded for your ability to lead and empower your team, to enhance their resilience and reputation for excellence. You will develop strong industry stakeholder networks across the region, state and country to drive the profile of HMT to prominence. You will have a genuine passion for the ongoing growth and relevance of the performing arts.

With a complex business model of managing three venues, a large casual workforce, and multiple income streams embedded to your annual operating budget, you will have a strong background in business and financial management.
