The City of Ballarat is seeking an enthusiastic transport planner to develop and deliver collaborative transport and land use projects including an Integrated Transport Strategy for the city.


The Role 

Project manage and action the preparation and implementation of municipal and regional strategies such as the Integrated Transport Strategy.

Provide robust, evidence-based advice on strategic transport planning issues and decisions for consideration by officers and councillors

Lead input to projects and processes across Council to deliver on transport mode shift, zero net carbon and road safety objectives.

Analyse transport data and work with consultants to ensure data is relevant to the City of Ballarat. 

Manage communication and engagement activities to improve uptake of bike riding, walking, shared and public transport by the community.


About You 

You will have:

Experience in transport or land use planning, or related policy, research or consultancy roles,

Experience in project management to deliver transport related projects.

Demonstrated ability to undertake local area and community planning, investigation and analysing transport data and trends.

Ability to understand current transport and travel behaviours and proactively investigate ways to overcome barriers.

Experience working in transport or planning across more than one sector (e.g., local government, state government, consulting, research, advocacy),

Experience developing or significantly contributing to municipal or regional transport strategies and processes.


Key Selection Criteria 

  • Degree in Town Planning, Transport Planning, Transport Engineering, or related field with relevant experience or lesser formal qualifications with extensive experience (>5 years).
  • Detailed understanding and interest in the relationship between transport and land use planning, and the interface between transport planning and other Council/government functions such as urban design, economic development, environmental management and social policy.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities including identifying solutions through proactively working across multiple disciplines.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to translate technical information into plain English and for a variety of audiences.
  • Highly developed project management skills and experience and the demonstrated ability to manage own time to achieve targets within a set timeline.
  • Strong conceptual skills with experience in conducting research, analysing data and synthesising results into tangible plans and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and actively lead others within a positive team environment.
