The Role

Casual positions exist for After Hours Animal Management Officers to undertake a range of activities to meet specific animal control duties in the After Hours Service for the City of Ballarat Animal Management Team.  

Reporting to the Team Leader Animal Management you will provide assistance to the Community to achieve and implement corrective actions relating to animal confinement and care by: 

  • Responding in the agreed time lines as set out for the After Hours team procedures
  • Providing timely advice to internal and external customers on Animal Control issues
  • Maintaining records and systems when impounding animals
  • Following and implementing Council’s return home policy on registered animals
  • Ensuring all identified animal owners are contacted to the best of your ability
  • Assisting the Ballarat Animal Shelter with weekend feeds and lock up and anything else as reasonably required

 

About You

To be successful in this role you will be willing to undertake a range of activities to meet specific animal control duties in the After Hours Service for the City of Ballarat whilst providing effective customer service by responding to animals at large and dog and cat collections by applying the relevant sections of the Domestic Animals Act 1994, Impounding Livestock Act 1994 and Council’s Local Laws. 

The successful candidate will represent the City of Ballarat Animal Management Unit by displaying Councils’ values and behaviours at all times and preferably be suitably qualified with the following experience: 

  • Completion of training course(s) in Municipal Law Enforcement with a focus on animal management is preferred and /or-
  • Knowledge and experience in handling a variety of animals, with particular experience in handling dogs and livestock.
  • Experience in dealing with difficult customers and situations. 

 

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience in animal handling including the ability to impound stock and follow procedures effectively. 
  • Good knowledge and skills in the use of computer software such as Microsoft Office and database packages.
  • Sound communication, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Time management and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks.
  • Current drivers licence including ability to handle trailer, floats, stock crate.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety issues relevant to work activities and work area
